Description
Work on new developments is always afoot at Craig
Loomes Design Group Ltd and a range of concept designs are slowly
emerging aimed at achieving the ultimate in seakeeping performance. A
concept more suited to larger vessels in the interests of achieving
sufficient interior volume, work to date has concentrated on large
ferries capable of high speeds through rough water. The grey test model
pictured was jointly funded by Custom Yachts Ltd and Diogene Marine of
Mauritius to prove the concept for an 18m recreational vessel and a 53m
passenger ferry respectively.
Essentially a single wavepiercer demi-hull, with small stabilizers,
early work on efficiency and stability is encouraging and development
continues. The model has been fitted with acceleration data logging
equipment so that comparisons can be made with similarly sized planing
monohulls and catamarans in a known sea state.

Duyfken |
| | General Particulars
| DescriptionDuyfken was a small yacht owned by the Dutch East India Company. In 1605-6 she made a voyage of exploration from Indonesia to the Cape York peninsula of Australia - the first historically recorded voyage to Australia and charting of the Australia coast. The Duyfken Foundation built a replica using European oak and 16th century construction techniques. Possible reconstructions of the ship's design were evaluated using Maxsurf. In 1999 the replica was launched and in 2002 she sailed from Australia to The Netherlands for the 400 year celebrations of the Dutch East India Company (VOC). The 18,200 nautical miles voyage along the original VOC traderoute took a little under 12 months to complete. |

Built in carbon, with lots of innovative electronic equipment aboard. The high tech solar panels produce about 1.5kW at peak, allowing the boat to sprint to speeds up to 25 km/hr, and cruise at 13 km/hr. FuriaOne finished fourth in the open class. The team intends to enter the 2010 event. Maxsurf allowed many different hull shapes to be evaluated before construction.
