Description

The TC 8.5 is designed to fit into the NZMYC Open 8.5 rule. The lightweight foam sandwich hulls have a full length spray rail to reduce the waterline beam, but increase room inside. The centre girder transfers the mainsheet load direct to the forestay, to reduce forestay sag and increase overall stiffness. Screacher can be flown from the end of the girder, while gennakers are flown from the prod. The outboard engine is in the girder, as well as a central winch to handle all halyards. A cruising option is also available. SS Penelope won the Open 8.5 Division of the Coastal Classic in 2006.
Maxsurf along with careful weight optimisation, meant the hull shaped could be well refined during the design process.

Description

This is a 16.5m carbon racing cat with cruising accommodation below.  A centre girder transmits the mainsheet loads to the forestay, and  allows the cross beams to be very low windage. The screachers are  flown from the end of the girder, reducing their forestay sag. A  spreaderless mast allows a self tacking jib or staysail. The cockpits have good shelters protecting the crew. Both the boat and the carbon  mast were built by New Zealand Multihulls in Silverdale, New Zealand. X-Factor has won the NZ Coastal Classic and Auckland Tauranga races. Maxsurf allowed the surface area to be reduced during the design process.
