Yacht DesignWhy Maxsurf in yacht design? The two main reasons to use Maxsurf in yacht design: 1. Optimisation toolsMaxsurf's parametric transformation can be used to quickly modify an existing design's hullshape parameters such as Cb, Cp, LCB without compromising the fairness of the hull. This can be driven through for example an automation spreadsheet (COM) where a series of hull shapes is generated and then analysed for stability, resistance and seakeeping performance. For more information, see the Maxsurf automation manual (recommended to use Internet Explorer).
2. Industry standard data exchangeYacht designers often use a range of different specialised software tools in their work. In order to accomodate for this, Maxsurf imports and exports the industry standard data formats DXF and IGES. Since Rhino is widely used in the yachting industry for styling of superstructures and marketing renderings, Maxsurf supports import and export of Rhino .3dm file format. This means Rhino's excellent NURB modelling tools such as sweep and fillet can now be used seamlessly in combination with Maxsurf hull fairing tools for high quality hull surfaces as well as the downstream analyses and structural definition capabilities of the Maxsurf suite.
Who else uses Maxsurf for yacht design? Please see the leisure case studies page for a detailed description of how Maxsurf and ShipConstructor are used in the design and fabrication of steel motor yachts.
