Workboats

Often designers and builders of workboats will work with a range of specialised software tools. Additionally this industry can be characterised by the varying range of project sizes and complexity. This requires CAD software tools to be scalable and offer a range of data exchange formats.

Software for Workboats

The following make Maxsurf very suitable for workboats and ferries from small to medium size:

1. Your Tool for Tendering

A lot of time can be spent doing tendering work in this highly competitive market. Large contracts for multiple boats for an overseas operator with a list of demands are becoming more and more common. The Naval Architect has to be able to do a feasibility study in a couple of hours and then iterate towards a solution that can be proposed to a potential customer. During this iteration, a range of software tools is used to do initial weight calculations, general arrangement plans, performance studies, and producing marketing images. The Maxsurf suite covers most of these initial design tasks directly and offers extensive data exchange capabilities for those tasks that other specialist CAD tools are good at.

Maxsurf's parametric transformation capability allows you to quickly modify an existing hullshape to required design parameters whilst maintaining the principle characteristics of the hull shape. Besides linear variations for length, breadth and depth or a linear search for a greater displacement, you can also carry out searches for design coefficients (including LCB, prismatic, block and midship). Maxsurf also comes with a range of sample designs that can be used as a starting point for any tender process.

2. Data Exchange Capabilities

As mentioned above, it is very important for a CAD package in this industry to be compatible with other specialist tools in the office. Maxsurf supports import and export of DXF, IGES, .3DM formats. All tables in Maxsurf can be easily copied and pasted into Microsoft Excel and visa versa.

The Maxsurf Suite also supports a range of other data exchange capability in the Hydrolink module. For example, Hydrolink allows you to export mesh data directly to the CFD application ShipFlow.

3. Workshop Structural Definition

For aluminium or steel fabricated boats, the Workshop module is another reason why you want to use the Maxsurf products. The Workshop module will quickly pay for itself if you do:

  • plate developments
  • longitudinal stiffener runs
  • web frame cut-out geometry

Additionally, Workshop's integration with ShipConstructor & NavisWorks is a vital contributor to the success of a lot of our Australian customers who have adopted Maxsurf and ShipConstructor & NavisWorks.
