Industries

Depending on whether you are designing and building vessels for commercial or defence applications, in steel or aluminium, for power or for sail, your CAD software requirements will vary. Whichever industry area you work in, the FormSys range of software can be used to optimise your design, improve production efficiency and facilitate collaboration amongst your team. Read on for suggested applications in defence, commercial ships, workboats, yacht design, education and classification.

Defence

In defence projects collaboration between different departments is paramount. ShipConstructor facilitates the involvements of the end-user, the fabricator and the design team all from a unified 3D model.

Large ships

A major factor in large ship production is the production output accuracy. The plate development methods in Maxsurf support a range of double curved plate fabrication techniques such as pin-jigs and plate templates. Plate geometry can be exported seamlessly into ShipConstructor or other CAD programs for further detailing.

Other features include:

  • Hull fairing - keep operator fuel costs down
  • Longitudinal stiffeners and web frame cutouts

Workboats

Often designers and builders of workboats will work with a range of specialised software tools. In this environment it is important that any software tool supports industry standard data exchange formats.

Also the fact that project sizes can vary significantly requires a software solution that is scalable and requires a modest initial investment with instant and flexible upgrade options when a larger project  comes along.

Maxsurf and ShipConstructor both work on a modular scalable bases and support industry standards DXF and IGES.

Yacht Design

High quality hull surfaces and frequent customer driven changes put a huge demand on the software tools in a luxury yacht design office. With the dynamic trimming and parametric transformation in Maxsurf, you can make on the fly modifications to the hullshape. This ease of use is carried all the way through to the downstream modules as well - to updating analysis and initial structural definitions all you need to do is re-load the Maxsurf design file with the latest surface shape.

The seamless data exchange with Rhino embraces the functionality of the Rhino NURB modelling tool inside Maxsurf.

Education

Time is precious for any course coordinator. Often, the focus of the course is easily distracted to learning the tool rather than achieving the learning goals it was meant to demonstrate. Maxsurf offers:

  • ease of use - graphical windows user interface
  • free online learning with videos
  • free student copy from dedicated student website
  • course examples on student website

Maxsurf is set up to reduce the dependency on the lecturer's knowledge of the software as well as the infrastructure of the university.

Classification

To investigate the stability characteristics of a design and the magnitude of the data that needs to be checked, a quick design check method is required. Maxsurf supports importing of existing designs from a range of different sources whether it is a IGES model or a paper drawing. From there it is a matter of either generating a TriMesh from point data, or modelling a NURB model.

This can then be loaded into Hydromax where the analysis data is supported by graphical feedback.
