Maxsurf Software Helps CDM Deliver Computer Cut Boats

Computer Aided Design and Manufacture (CAD/CAM) has now become a standard part of the marine construction industry, but nowhere is it being used to greater effect than at Computer Design Marine (CDM) in Western Australia. CDM have cemented their place as one of the leaders in a new market for computer cut aluminium kit boats by extensive usage of the Maxsurf design software developed by Formation Design Systems.

Utilising a design created completely on-screen using the Maxsurf naval architecture software, CDM are able to explore design options including hydrostatic and stability calculations, performance prediction and computer assisted generation of parts for construction. CDM takes full advantage of the functions offered by the Maxsurf range of software which includes the Maxsurf modeller for initial design, the Hydromax module for performing large angle stability calculations and tank calibrations, and, most importantly, the Workshop construction module. Workshop assists with generation of longitudinal stringers, plate development and export of 2D templates for NC cutting. It automatically produces DXF files of 2D templates as well as table of part weights, cut lengths and centres of gravity.

All of the 250 CDM vessels built to date have been designed, analysed and built using templates created with the Maxsurf software range. Maxsurf's range of options for creating various size models from a parent form has helped CDM rapidly respond to clients requests for variations on standard designs.

The payoff for builders and customers has been accurate parts quickly delivered for construction, lower costs and minimal requirements for skilled labour or complex infrastructure.

To date the combination of the Maxsurf software range and CDM's design experience has been used to produce all types of vessels ranging from professional fishing boats, workboats, ferries, patrol vessels and landing craft.
